Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights did this year provide, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant concern. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, shortly before the term commenced, I remained in my room all day, too intimidated to step outside and meet others. Now, I can speak with confidence that I’ve established some of the finest friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that first step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, there’s no need to worry! There will be numerous opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you will inevitably discover like-minded people.

Another obstacle was handling the workload and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and in certain respects, the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel lacking. What helped me navigate this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re confused about something, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from both peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned earlier the importance of taking initiative – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position allowed me to become acquainted with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to seize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
