Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was unfamiliar territory for my previously shy and reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and joy! But what insights has this year imparted, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Today, though, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I discovered that taking an initial leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being true to oneself is crucial. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such an environment can severely impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me cope with that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are too. Thus, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the staff, and it’s among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the available support from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never truly alone and taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
