Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Dipping into the deep end was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and where do I find myself at this moment?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect of starting university can be quite daunting, and if you’re considering enrolling, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what’s the lesson learned? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the year’s beginning. If you don’t quite feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities and events designed to help you connect with fellow students. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re destined to encounter people like you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can sometimes challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the affirmation that everyone is in the same situation as you. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are also perplexed. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. Numerous opportunities exist to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this university experience is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess!

In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated by the many support avenues available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
