Back in October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not a familiar territory for my previously introverted and reserved self. Looking back now, I reflect on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my inaugural day moving into my dormitory, just a few days before classes started, I remained in my room for the entire day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what have I taken away from this? I’ve learned that it’s crucial to take the plunge right from the beginning. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, that’s fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also realized that staying true to yourself is essential. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a clear escalation from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me during this time was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, chances are others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to your classmates and faculty for assistance!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year wellness representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to build relationships with faculty, and it is one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
