Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the year, I can recognize an academic experience filled with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most formidable obstacles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day isolating in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here now, I can assert that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what lesson did I take away? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be true to yourself. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the materials. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an atmosphere can sometimes challenge your confidence; you may observe classmates studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone experiences the same struggles. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that at least a few others also find it baffling. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face hardships. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated by the abundant support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to enjoy myself while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
