Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I learned this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the beginning of term, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet new people. Sitting here today, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be abundant ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another significant hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate through that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something difficult to comprehend, I can almost assure you that others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the abundant support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never on my own, and it has shown me how to enjoy my time even amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
