Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unknown was far beyond the comfort zone of my previously shy and reserved self. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most overwhelming challenges encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an aspiring student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodations, a few days before term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can confidently proclaim that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known at this university and in this program. I’ve cultivated a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, do not fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you could embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’ll surely encounter people like yourself.

Another hurdle was the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes challenge your self-confidence; witnessing others study might leave you feeling inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in managing that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle with a concept, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who are equally perplexed. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Solicit help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I did not fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke earlier about taking risks – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance being provided to you. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased by the plethora of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
