Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was preparing to start my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Taking the plunge into unfamiliar territory was not typical for my formerly shy and reserved self. Looking back on the last academic year, I perceive a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was making connections. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your top worries. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too afraid to step out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve forged some amazing friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all sparked by some casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with fellow students. Additionally, I learned that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your mindset.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere can be challenging to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can virtually assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Therefore, do seek assistance. This may be the foremost lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely wish for you to excel and comprehend that students encounter difficulties. They sympathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had reached out sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I did indeed take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it’s taught me how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
