Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my once-shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my moving-in day, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with peers in similar situations. So, what lesson did I take away? I learned that it’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities will arise to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be true to yourself. With the range of individuals present in the course and university, you are certain to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in several aspects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is in the same position. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are as well. So, seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to take away from the first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards us and keep open lines of communication about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are various ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support available. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the assistance from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized I am never alone, and I’ve learned to appreciate myself amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
