Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping in the deep end was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current status?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university can be particularly daunting, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be among your primary concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I have forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and during this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter like-minded people.
Another obstacle I faced was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. Earlier, I talked about taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support you’re provided. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with the support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
