By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I learned, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a primary worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet people. Now, I can proudly claim that I’ve made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities available to help you engage with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you’re sure to connect with like-minded individuals.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. Several factors aided me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are various ways to engage with the staff, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!

Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
