Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead as I prepared to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in such an unfamiliar environment was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?

Among the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of forming friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it’s likely a concern on your mind. On my move-in day, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too hesitant to venture out and greet others. Yet, here I am today, pleased to say that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversation with peers in similar situations. So, what did this teach me? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also came to understand that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With the diversity among students in the course and university, you’re certain to find like-minded individuals.

A further obstacle I faced was the volume of work and the complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and in some respects, there was an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Finding oneself in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; observing others studying may lead to feelings of inadequacy. A few elements helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, you can almost be sure that there are a number of others in the same position. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for support from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to build relationships with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and pursuing these connections is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support that is available to you. You can never have too much help!

On a broader note, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are often unwarranted and can be alleviated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
