Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was feeling anxious, frightened, and unsure about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most overwhelming challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it could be a primary concern for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day hiding in my room because I felt too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting on this now, I can say with confidence that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with initiating small conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I learn? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another challenge I encountered was the volume of work and complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even bigger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always conducive to building confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling; one of which was the realization that everyone else is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that there are several others who are also in the same position. Therefore, seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are wonderful. They genuinely wish for you to prosper and understand that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic towards students and maintain open communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance being offered to you. There’s never too much help!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost invariably baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
