Twelve months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the deep end was not a scenario my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of entering university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be among your primary concerns. On my moving-in day, a few days before the semester began, I spent the entire day sheltering in my room, too shy to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively state that I’ve built some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with fellow students in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the start of the academic year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.
Another obstacle was the demands of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few helpful strategies assisted me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others also don’t comprehend it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one early in the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be eased with the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
