By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was definitely not something my previously introverted and reserved self was prepared for. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period marked by personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most frightening hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university can be quite intimidating, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be among your top concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too afraid to step out and meet new people. However, sitting here today, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships during my time at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I’ve realized that embracing those initial moments of the year is crucial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events to help you engage with others. I also found that if you could embody one trait, it should be authenticity. There’s a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to connect with like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can pose a challenge to your self-esteem; seeing others studying might make you feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is navigating the same journey. If something eludes your understanding, I can almost assure you others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most pivotal lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both your fellow students and the faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and recognize the challenges students face. They show understanding and keep an open line of communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t really utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I’d taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and this is undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary insight from this element of university life is to utilize the resources available to you. You can never have too much help!

Ultimately, this year has made me realize that anxiety, both prior to and during university, is nearly always unfounded and can be eased through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to balance enjoyment even in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
