By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year enriched with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect of beginning university can certainly be one of the more nerve-wracking parts, and if you’re considering this as a potential student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On my first day of moving into my dormitory, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself. As I sit here now, I can affirm that I’ve developed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many varied individuals in the course and university, you’re certain to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to succeed and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the close of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a wellness representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both leading up to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the plethora of support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
