Approximately ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student perusing this, it might be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assertively state that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with a bit of casual conversation with folks in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse community throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the volume and complexity of the workload. There was indeed a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you there are others who also do not comprehend it. So, do not hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had sooner. I previously spoke of taking leaps – I made one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have an excess!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the plethora of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and how to relish experiences despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
