Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been one filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current status?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be a source of concern for you. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to fear of stepping out and introducing myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can affirmatively say I’ve bonded with some of the closest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking activities and events designed to help you connect with your peers. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody one quality, it should be authenticity. With a diverse mix of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find individuals who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and difficulty of content. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in coping with that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a few others who also feel lost. Thus, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty within Materials is outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a wellbeing representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for your personal benefit! My primary takeaway from this part of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!
On a broader note, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, along with how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
