Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back at the prior academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I discovered this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your top concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to go out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a risk at the start of the year is always favorable. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to assist you in engaging with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals in the program and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel incompetent. A few factors helped me conquer that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing a similar situation. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t really make use of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to exploit the support provided. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be diminished through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to relish my time even amid pressures like examinations and deadlines.
