Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was set to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the deep end was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I can see a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I learned this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your chief worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet others. Sitting here today, though, I can assertively say I have made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with small conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I find out? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those like you.

Another challenge was the workload and difficulty of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to confidence; you might see your peers studying and feel less than capable. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is facing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who don’t either. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

That leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to get acquainted with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support that’s available to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the plethora of support resources from staff and fellow students. It has made me realize that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
