Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back at the last year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with people in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be innumerable ice-breaker occasions and events designed to help you connect with others. I also understood that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people similar to you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost guarantee that others are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Ask for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

That leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They sympathize with students and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took a significant one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to establish connections with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance offered. You can never have too much!

Generally speaking, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are almost always baseless and can be eased with the multitude of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary, and it has shown me how to enjoy my experience alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
