Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have emerged, and what is my status now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student perusing this, it may rank as one of your main worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too overwhelmed to venture out and meet others. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, with it all beginning through casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I ascertain? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always the optimal strategy. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to facilitate interaction with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be authenticity. With such a rich diversity of people within the course and university, you’re destined to find those who align with your spirit.
An additional challenge involved managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can test your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me in navigating that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others share the same experience. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek guidance from your colleagues and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter hurdles. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the support resources until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized them earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become familiar with the faculty, which is immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. There’s no such thing as too much support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased with the various support systems accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
