Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer to university. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to venture out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve cultivated a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you engage with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With the wide array of people across the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who connect with you.

Another significant hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first semester to the second. Being in such a setting can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies aided me in navigating this, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that many others are in the same predicament. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Ask for assistance from classmates and staff!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to excel and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and maintain a steady line of communication with us throughout the year about our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking initiatives earlier – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
