Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the cusp of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often stands as one of the most daunting features of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be one of your foremost concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Conversely, today, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversation with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who share your interests.
Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a notable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me cope with this sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be one of the most crucial lessons to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the teaching staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to achieve and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They resonate with our experiences and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I talked about taking leaps before – I made one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can undertake for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to utilize the resources available. You can never receive too much assistance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of unease, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the myriad support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy even amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
