Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly the norm for my previously introverted and reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and fun. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a future student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to step out and socialize. Yet today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I come to understand? It’s vital to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With such a wide range of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your mindset.
Another challenge involved the volume of work and the complexity of content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper ascent from the first to the second term. Being in this environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others do too. So, seek help. This might be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show compassion and maintain steady communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, which I regret not doing sooner. I spoke of taking chances earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to get acquainted with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your well-being! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the resources available. You can never have too much support!
Ultimately, this year has imparted that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased through the myriad support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never solitary and has taught me how to find joy even amidst challenges like exams and deadlines.
