By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey of personal development, difficulties, and quite a bit of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This often stands out as one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your top concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you bond with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, embody your true self. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to discover others who resonate with you.
An additional obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less than capable. A few aspects aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that several others also don’t get it. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Look for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had made use of it earlier. I mentioned previously about taking risks – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the help available. You can never have an excess of support!
Overall, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the various support systems offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and revealed how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
