Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what has this year taught me, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be a major concern for you. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet others. However, as I sit here today, I can confidently express that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversation with people in similar situations. So, what did I learn? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a leap at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment can take a toll on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who don’t either. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They truly want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best moves you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support provided. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has illuminated that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the various support avenues available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
