Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as an aspiring student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, several days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too frightened to go out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever encountered, here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always wise to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fear not! There will be no shortage of ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find others like you.
Another challenge was the workload and complexity of the content. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can sometimes be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies supported me through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re perplexed by something, I can almost assure you that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may perhaps be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I referenced taking chances before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available to you. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the numerous support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It’s made me realize that I’m never by myself, and it’s illustrated how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
