By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a time marked by personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university can definitely be quite overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student perusing this, it might be one of your main worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I have ever known at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I discovered? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one of them being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others also need clarification. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

That brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges.
