Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting parts of embarking on university life, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might top your list of worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. As I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve built some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I recognized that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people similar to you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Some factors helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t get it. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university aspect is to capitalize on the assistance you’re provided. You can never receive too much!

Broadly speaking, this year has revealed that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be alleviated through the abundant support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
