**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted, stepping into unfamiliar territory was far from comfortable. Now, as I reflect on a year filled with academic progress, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I am compelled to consider the lessons I’ve acquired and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating elements of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might relate to my experience. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—companions who feel like a second family.

What shifted? It all initiated with small actions, such as engaging in light conversation with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was. The most significant revelation I gained is that taking early leaps of faith reaps rewards. Even if you feel unprepared, the university offers numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the heavy coursework and complexity of university-level material was another substantial obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university standards was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more challenging. It’s common to feel inundated and doubt your abilities, especially when you observe others seemingly thriving.

What aided me the most was the realization that everyone shares similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s highly probable that others are as well. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your initial year.

### The Value of Support and Connection

In relation to support, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and fully acknowledge the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and exhibited empathy towards our difficulties. Although I didn’t fully engage in the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I stepped up and became a Year Well-Being Representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be an invaluable experience. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My major takeaway? Leverage the support systems available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Upon reflection, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unfounded. The broad spectrum of support, from staff to fellow students, was transformative. I’ve recognized that I am never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of self-exploration, development, and connection. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, understand that challenges are unavoidable, but so are the chances to succeed. Take those risks, embrace the support available to you, and most importantly, relish the experience.
