Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights did this year impart, and what is my current situation?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking initiative at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events to help you engage with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be your authentic self. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable difference from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel deficient. A few factors helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned taking initiatives before – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
