Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my once shy and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your foremost concerns. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assertively declare that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I grasp? I understood that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. There are countless diverse individuals across the course and university; you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re puzzled by something, I can almost assure you that there are several others who are equally confused. Thus, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the support offered to you. You can never have too much!

On a broader scale, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be soothed with the myriad of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has educated me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
