Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy self was used to. Reflecting back, I observe a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gathered this year, and what is my current state?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might significantly concern you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships during my time at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous social events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With a wide array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
An additional challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was unquestionably a shift from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others are in the same boat. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb during the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty members in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly tap into the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the available support. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has taught me that the anxious feelings associated with university are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
