Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this past year provided, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, just days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. However, today I can affirmatively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this institution and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with brief conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With so many varied individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your vibes.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the challenge presented by the material. There was undoubtedly a jump from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me through this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling as well. So, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and understand the challenges students encounter. They connect with us and ensure ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I spoke about taking risks earlier – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this part of university is to seize the opportunities for help that are available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the different support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m not alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
