Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most formidable challenges was forging friendships. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be among your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most valuable friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always the best route. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who vibe with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the intensity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an environment can put your confidence to the test; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate this sensation, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing the same struggles. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that others are grappling with it too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with students and maintain open communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged earlier. I referenced taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own well-being! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available. You can never receive too much!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and throughout university, are often misplaced and can be alleviated through the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and has taught me to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
