Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I realize I’ve had an academic year overflowing with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I discovered this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most stressful challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent an entire day retreating in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in some casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel completely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate interactions with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentically yourself. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the program and university; you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I needed to overcome was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-level studies, and in some regards, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can occasionally undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the assurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges as you. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can almost assure you that there are several others who are also confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students have difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be eased by the multitude of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment, even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
