By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, ten months ago, I found myself anxious and uncertain about what was to come as I geared up to start my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a time of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a major worry for newcomers at university. On my first day of moving into my living space, I spent the whole day in my room, too nervous to step out and socialize. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all began with casual conversations with individuals in the same boat. The main lesson? Take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker activities to help you engage with others. Be genuine, and you’ll discover like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was coping with the workload and the intricacy of the material. The shift from A-levels was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inadequate when you start comparing yourself to your peers. Remember, everyone is navigating the same waters. If something confuses you, others probably feel the same. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—this is vital in your initial year. Reach out to both peers and instructors!

The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and understand the challenges faced by students. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later on, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to engage with staff—a rewarding experience. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. Make the most of the available support; you can never have enough!

This year has taught me that apprehensions regarding university are typically baseless and can be eased with the support offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
