Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently viewed as one of the most frightening aspects of starting university, and if you are an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, far too scared to venture out and introduce myself to others. As I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in small talk with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I come to understand? I found that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, that’s okay! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and activities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With the plethora of diverse individuals across the program and university, you are certain to encounter those who resonate with you.
A further challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are others who share your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might very well be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I noted before about taking risks – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with them, and it’s certainly among the best actions you can take for your personal development! My primary takeaway from this university aspect is to utilize the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much!
On a broader scale, this year has imparted the lesson that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and taught me how to find enjoyment amidst pressure such as exams and deadlines.
