By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my housing, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversation with individuals in analogous situations. What have I learned? It’s essential to take a step forward at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Also, just be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and campus, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the demands of the coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might see peers studying and feel like you don’t measure up. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others don’t either. So, ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Seek help from your classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep an open line of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is priceless. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and this is one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support available from staff and fellow students. It revealed to me that I am never alone and how to have fun even in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
