Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, just ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in uncharted territory was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester’s start, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. However, reflecting from this point, I can assert that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family here at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that making a bold move at the commencement of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will present themselves to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse range of people in the program and university, you’re destined to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a distinct escalation from A-levels, and, in some instances, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this environment can test your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you don’t comprehend something, I can nearly guarantee others are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely aspire for your success and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps earlier – I did make one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is exceedingly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this university experience is to fully utilize the support available. You can never receive too much assistance!

In a broader sense, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be alleviated through the myriad of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
