Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and for those of you considering this as future students, it may rank among your greatest worries. On my move-in day, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and introduce myself. However, here I sit today, ready to affirm that I have forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that embarking on the year with a leap of faith is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and activities to help you connect with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. There’s a vast variety of people throughout the course and university; you’re bound to meet those who resonate with you.
Another challenge I had to tackle was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such a challenging environment can be a blow to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are several others who are just as confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to acquire in your first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referenced before about taking chances – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to engage with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the help that is being offered. You can never have an excess of support!
Broadly, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased by the plethora of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone, and I’ve discovered how to balance enjoyment alongside sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
