Reflecting back ten months to October 2022, I was feeling anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what was to come as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unknown wasn’t something my previously introverted and quiet self was accustomed to. Now, looking back, I recognize an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted on me, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating aspects of starting university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it is likely at the forefront of your concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted by the thought of venturing out to greet others. But now, as I sit here, I can confidently affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was initiating small conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate engagement with others. Additionally, I discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse spectrum of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to connect with like-minded people.

Another challenge I had to overcome was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a marked increase from A-levels, and in many respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. To navigate through that feeling, I found solace in the reminder that everyone shares the same experiences. If you find yourself confused by something, I can nearly assure you that several others share that confusion as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t shy away from asking for help from both your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success, recognizing that students often experience challenges.
