In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not typical for my formerly shy and reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hardships, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned from this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting components of starting university, and if you’re perusing this as an incoming student, it might be among your top worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Now, however, I can assertively say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in analogous circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there is one thing you should be, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to find people akin to you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies aided me through that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally confused. Hence, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They connect with students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t actively utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the commencement of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s truly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the support offered to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated with the support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to relish the experience even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
