Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was far from what my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and loads of enjoyment! But, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
A significant and intimidating hurdle was forging friendships. This is often one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student perusing this, it may be one of your main concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and interact with others. However, I can now confidently affirm that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s essential to take a risk at the onset of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fear not! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. I also came to understand that if you can be anything, simply be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.
The workload and the complexity of the material posed another challenge. There was indeed a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can impact your confidence; you may witness others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something puzzling, I can nearly guarantee that many others also do. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had availed it earlier. I previously mentioned taking jumps – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a year wellness representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the greatest things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of help!
Ultimately, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated, and it’s demonstrated how to relish in my experience alongside challenges such as exams and deadlines.
