Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was equipped for. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here now, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it merely required some brief conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re destined to encounter people like you.
Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a heightened level from A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things supported me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This may very well be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I referenced taking risks earlier – I indeed took one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this component of university is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much!
On a broader scale, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are almost invariably baseless and can be mitigated with the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
