Ten months back, in October 2022, I was inundated with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not an experience my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often ranks high among the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, far too shy to venture out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve discovered the importance of making the first move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you have the chance to be anything, just be yourself. With a diverse range of individuals spread throughout the course and university, you’re sure to discover people who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume of work and difficulty of the material. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear, I can nearly promise that there are others who also do not grasp it. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Ask for support from both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our challenges. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken that step sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s among the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance that is offered to you. You can never have too much help!
On a broader scale, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be lessened through the wealth of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
