Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was ready for. Looking back now, I realize it has been a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I grasp? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker situations and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one quality, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who share your mindset.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a significant increase from A-levels, and to some extent, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the notion that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same struggles. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Ask for help from your fellow students and the staff!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and keep up ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I talked about taking risks earlier – I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many ways to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the wisest moves you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this segment of university is to leverage the support available to you. You can never have excess help!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be eased through the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
