Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the cusp of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of entering university, and for any prospective students, it may pose a significant concern. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes commencing, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too hesitant to venture out and meet new people. Today, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what is my takeaway? I learned to make an effort from the outset of the year. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With a wide array of diverse individuals at the university, you will likely find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I faced was the volume of work and difficulty of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even steeper jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you may feel unqualified compared to your peers. Remember, everyone shares a similar experience. If you’re struggling to understand something, others are probably struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may well be the most vital lesson in the first year. Seek guidance from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They offer understanding and keep in touch with us throughout the year concerning our worries. I didn’t make the most of the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with them earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I took a significant one by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your growth! My key takeaway is to utilize the resources available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are frequently baseless and can be alleviated through the support received from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated that I’m never truly alone and has imparted the lesson of how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
