Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a major concern for newcomers to university. On my first day in my accommodation, prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day in my room, feeling too daunted to go outside and meet new people. Now, I can confidently affirm that I’ve forged some of the most valuable friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It all began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. I discovered that taking initiative at the start of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events to aid in connecting with others. Most importantly, be authentic; you will attract people like yourself.

An additional challenge was the workload and complexity of the material. There was a noticeable shift from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel inferior when measuring yourself against others, but keep in mind, everyone shares the same experience. If you find something difficult to grasp, chances are others do as well. Seeking assistance is crucial in the first year, whether from fellow students or faculty.

The faculty in Materials are amazing. They genuinely want students to excel and are aware of the challenges encountered. They maintain open lines of communication regarding any concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the academic year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with staff—a priceless opportunity. There are numerous methods to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make. Make the most of the assistance provided; you can never have too much!

This year has shown me that anxieties about university are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support offered by both staff and peers. I’ve come to realize that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
